چکیده

Studies asking witnesses to identify perpetrators from photo lineups have usually found that witness racial prejudice is unrelated to perpetrator identification accuracy. However, these studies obtained identifications from a photoarray in which photos were presented simultaneously. Study 1 used a procedure in which photos were presented sequentially. Results showed that when perpetrators were African-American, explicitly egalitarian witnesses more often made incorrect identification decisions than racially prejudiced witnesses. There were no explicit prejudicerelated differences in decision accuracy rates when perpetrators were Caucasian. Results were similar, but limited to non-African-American witnesses, when implicit prejudice was assessed. Replicating results from the traditional simultaneous identification procedure, Study 2 did not yield a relation between racial prejudice and accuracy. Potential explanations and implications are discussed.

Sleep and eyewitness memory: Fewer false identifications after sleep when the target is absent from the lineup

Inaccurate eyewitness identifications are the leading cause of known false convictions in the United States. Moreover, improving eyewitness memory is difficult and often unsuccessful. Sleep consistently strengthens and protects memory from interference, particularly when a recall test is used. However, the effect of sleep on recognition memory is more equivocal. Eyewitness identification tests ...

INFLUENCE OF A PERPETRATOR’S DISTINCTIVE FACIAL FEATURE ON EYEWITNESS IDENTIFICATION FROM SIMULTANEOUS VERSUS SEqUENTIAL LINEUPS

This study featured a multiple-block face recognition paradigm. For each of several blocks, participants studied a sequential presentation of briefly-presented faces that included a target, and then later in the same block they made an identification decision from either a simultaneous or sequential lineup. Targets had been rated for distinctiveness and then a distinctive feature (scar, mole, o...

The aging eyewitness: effects of age on face, delay, and source-memory ability.

As a way to examine the nature of age-related differences in lineup identification accuracy, young (16-33 years) and older (60-82 years) witnesses viewed two similar videotaped incidents, one involving a young perpetrator and the other involving an older perpetrator. The incidents were followed by two separate lineups, one for the younger perpetrator and one for the older perpetrator. When the ...
